Fur on screen: Film & TV that use faux fur

Not only do faux fur throws look wonderful wrapped over an armchair, but they’ve also made a few starring turns on the big screen.

Many costume and set designers and Hollywood honchos are turning to faux fur and animal-friendly materials as a means of recreating looks and styles from yesteryear that would have traditionally used the real thing.

From the medieval heroes of Westeros to iconic TV adverts featuring Snoop Doggy dogg, some of the most famous folk from our screens have donned faux furs in recent years.

Check out how faux fur was used in these classic silver screen adventures.

Furs in The Revenant

After almost losing his life in a brutal bear attack, frontiersman Hugh Glass ended up owing the pelt his life. Leonardo DiCaprio won a coveted Academy Award for his role as the famous fur trapper in 2015 film The Revenant.

Though the bearskin used during filming was an antique piece, the bear’s grease slathered on it by the costume department was entirely fake.

The use of bear’s grease as insulation can be traced back to Native American culture. After boiling the fatty parts of a bear’s carcass, the excess liquid could be used to prolong the life and warmth of their fur coats.

The Revenant team kept their recipe for their own waxy substance a secret. However, it allegedly brought the entire weight of the coat to a hefty 45 kilograms (100 lbs).

Lord of the rings fur throw

Furs in The Lord of the Rings

Faux fur elements pop up throughout Peter Jackson’s stunning trilogy The Lord of the Rings. Based on the titular series by J.R.R. Tolkein, The Lord of the Rings’ fantastical setting and medieval feel meant fur would have been a popular choice for the creatures and characters that make up the world of the movie.

With other 19,000 costumes produced over the course of the film shoot, there was plenty of chance for faux fur to crop up, from the would-be warg pelts of the Mordor Orcs to the Thorins robe, pictured. Check out our own  Mountain Grey Wolf faux fur throw here.

Furs in Togo

Willem Dafoe goes all out on the faux fur look in Disney’s Togo. Set during the 1925 Serum Run sled-dog race, Dafoe plays team trainer Leonhard Seppala.

For a period piece such as this, the film’s costume team needed to create a look that resembled the furs and thick coats worn by Alaskan residents in the early 20th century.

Imitation husky and wolf fur were used to create the winter-weather look, as Seppala and his faithful hounds tackle one of the most gruelling sledge sports in the world. Check out our own  Mountain Grey Wolf faux fur throw here.

Furs in Game of Thrones

One of the most popular TV shows ever, Game of Thrones has a long association with faux fur. In a land populated by giant wolves, mammoths and a whole lot of ice, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that character costumes featured a lot of fake pelts to combat the cold.

Brooding Jon Snow’s iconic black wolf fur became a mainstay of his character. In fact, it\’s a faux fur throw itself.

Faux fur throws were used during the filming of the show’s eight seasons as stand-ins for skins and pelt coats. Check out our own Mountain Grey Wolf Throw

Brad Pitt as Achilles in Troy

Furs in Troy

Brad Pitt’s portrayal of Achilles in Troy is one that he says he would rather forget. Despite the critics certified unfresh ratings at the time, the film has found itself something of a cult following. Ones things for sure, the set designers were on point. Draped in fur throws and animal hides, the luxurious textures emphasise Achilles’ status as a warrior god among mortals. The furs offer a glimpse into ancient opulence—one that modern faux fur can recreate in any home.

Fur throws in Vikings TV series

Furs in Vikings

In the Norse world of Vikings, fur throws are practically a character of their own. Whether draped over thrones in Kattegat, layered on beds in the great halls, or lining the benches of longhouses, thick pelts are used throughout the series to signify power, warmth and tribal heritage.

The production designers made extensive use of faux fur to create an atmosphere that felt both primal and regal. If you’re after a throw fit for a Jarl, look no further than our Mountain Grey Wolf Throw.
